Located in Youngstown, Ohio, Youngstown State University is an urban research institution that boasts and annual student enrollment of over 15,000. Founded in 1908 as a small law school and operated by the local YMCA, the University has undergone several name changes and adaptations before becoming Youngstown State University.

Academic College and Programs

The University is divided into seven academic colleges through which the University’s over 100 programs are administered. Of these programs, Criminal Justice/Safety Studies claims the highest percentage of student enrollment at 6%. The General Studies and Nursing programs each claim 5% of total student enrollment.

While the University’s student enrollment consists of over 15,000 students, Youngstown State, for short, boasts a student-faculty ratio of 18:1. Approximately 35% of classes at the University have less than 20 students in each section.

The University’s employs 2,100 individuals, 426 of which are full-time faculty. Of these full-time faculty members, 165 are professors and the majority of instructors hold PhD’s.

Affordability

Both in-state and out-of-state tuition at Youngstown State is relatively affordable. The University, like many others, attempts to facilitate student financial aid by providing a number of aid opportunities. Recently, the University awarded over $150 million in funds to students and 88% of the total student body received some sort of financial aid assistance.
