The World Mission Theological University was founded in 1988 in response to the prayers of a special committee of the Oriental Mission Church for a new seminary to train pastors, missionaries and other church leaders. To better represent the growing range of academic programs and offerings the university was offering the school changed its name in 1993 to World Mission University.

In 2003, the university relocated to Koreatown, in dowtown Los Angeles – where it currently resides. Soon after its relocation, World Mission University achieved accreditation status with the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools and the Association of Biblical Higher Education.
