School Overview

The College of William and Mary, officially known as The College of William & Mary in Virginia is a four-year highly residential research university located in the city of Williamsburg, in the state of Virginia. The university was founded in 1693 by royal command of King William and Queen mary of Scottland. With exception of Harvard University, the College of William & Mary is the oldest higher education institution in the United States.

As one of the oldest colleges in the U.S. and over 300 years old, The College of William & Mary has seen its fair share of students. Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler, and James Monroe (our founding fathers) and several other famous figures all attended The College of William & Mary.

The college offers an extensive selection of undergraduate degrees as well as several graduate programs in various disciplines, including law, public policy, business, education, marine science, and not surprisingly American colonial history. The College of William and Mary mary also offers several joint degree programs through partnerships with Columbia University (joint degree in engineering) and the University of St. Andrews in Scottland (joint degree in liberal arts).

While the college offers graduate degrees (mostly in STEM fields), it is considered primarily an undergraduate institution–it focuses on ensure the high quality undergraduate experience for its students as possible. About 15% of William & Mary’s undergraduate class comes from foreign exchange programs via educational exchange partnerships the college has established with 15 foreign schools.

William & Mary is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to confer bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional degrees. Currently, the college does not offer distance learning online degree programs.
