School Overview
The University of Wisconsin–Stout, which belongs to the University of Wisconsin System, is a public higher education institution located in Menomonie, Wisconsin. It was originally founded in 1891 as the Stout Manual Training School, a private institution. However, when its founder (James Huff Stout) died in 1911, the institution was transferred to the state of Wisconsin and it became Stout State College. Later it was merged into the University of Wisconsin System and was re-charted as the University of Wisconsin–Stout. The university is only the second of two institutions in the University of Wisconsin System not named after the city in which it resides.
UW–Stout has a total annual enrollment of roughy 9,500 student (8,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate) and a full-time staff of roughly 400, making it one of the larger universities in Wisconsin. UW–Stout is also home to one of the studios for Wisconsin Public Television and the WVSS (90.7 FM) and WHWC radio broadcasting stations.
Unlike the majority of University of Wisconsin System institutions, UW–Stout is a special mission polytechnic university. The primary mission of the university is to provide education and training for students seeking professional careers in commerce, industry, human development and education. UW–Stout offers technology, design, science, business, engineering, education and industrial management courses designed to achieve this objective.
