School Overview
The University of Washington, often referred to as UW, UDub, or simply Washington, is a public, research university located in Seattle, Washington. It is a Public Ivy League institution and a member of the American Association of Universities. UW was launched in 1861 and is among the oldest of West Coast colleges. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ranked the University of Washington 16th in its list of top 500 universities and the Times Higher Education ranked UW 25th in reputation among the 100 best universities in the world.
UW has three campuses. The university’s largest campus is located in downtown Seattle in the University District. The other two are located in the cities of Tacoma and Bothell. For fiscal year 2012, UW’s budget for general operations and research exceeded $7.2 billion. UW’s research budget is among the highest in the nation. University of Washington campus includes over 500 buildings that together have over 20 million square-feet of space.
UW athletic teams compete in the NCAA, Division I, Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12).
