School Overview

The University of the West (locally referred to as “UWest”) is a non-profit, private university that resides in Rosemead, California. The University was founded by Master Hsing Yun in 1991 and the school offered its first classes in the spring of the same year. Master Hsing Yung was also the founder of the Hsi Lai Temple and the Buddhist Order of Guang Shan. (The Buddhist Order of Guang is based in Taiwan. The Hsi Lai Temple serves as the headquarters for the Order in the United States.)

Even though the University was founded by Buddhists, UWest is not a Buddist school. Students are not required to belong to the Buddhist faith or practice Buddhism in any way. In fact, UWest’s degree programs in Business Administration are much more popular among students than its programs in Religious Studies.

UWest is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges to provide undergraduate and graduate degrees. The school offers a large selection of programs ranging from religious studies to business administration.
