School Overview
The University of Saint Mary was established in 1923 by the Sisters of Charity and is located in Leavenworth, Kansas. While it originally started out as a junior college for women, the school is now a coeducational, 4 year, private, liberal arts college associated with the Catholic Church operating in three locations. The university has over 1300 students enrolled and is known for a personalized approach to learning with an education that is based on the values of community, respect, justice, and excellence.
Degree Programs
Though it is a smaller university, University of Saint Mary offers over 35 degree programs including undergraduate programs, accelerated degree-completion programs, graduate programs, and even a doctoral degree program. University of Saint Mary has also made several of their programs available online and has a student to teacher ratio of 10:1.
While there are many more available, some of most common programs students enroll in at University of Saint Mary are the Registered Nursing program, Sport and Fitness Administration/Management, Psychology, Business Administration and Management, and Elementary Education and Teaching.
Accreditation
University of Saint Mary is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges & Schools (NCA). The university also participates in The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), a quality-based, continuous improvement model of institutional accreditation which is also through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Athletics
The sports teams at the University of Saint Mary are called the Spires and compete in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and participates in cross country, track and field, baseball, soccer, football, baseball, cheer and dance, lacrosse, volleyball and softball.
Library System
De Paul library is a resource center for the University of Saint Mary’s students to study and do research. It houses several special collections including the Bernard H. Hall Abraham Lincoln Collection and the John and Mary Craig Scripture Collection, and has made its catalogue available online.
Rankings
The University of Saint Mary has appeared on The Princeton Review’s “Best Midwestern College” list several times due to the fact that they consistently meet high standards of academic excellence.

There are a number of academic scholarships that University of Saint Mary awards to high school graduates as well as transfer students who demonstrate high levels of achievement and potential. Some of the scholarships require that students demonstrate leadership and service as well as academic aptitude.
Student Housing
At the University of Saint Mary students will find two residence halls, Maria Hall and Berkel Hall. Both are conveniently located giving students easy access to the classrooms and other on-campus services and events. Amenities include laundry facilities, common kitchens, study and common lounges, cable and high-speed internet access and suite-style rooms.
