The University of Pittsburgh, commonly referred to as Pitt, is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is a state, research university and was originally founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787, and renamed as the University of Pittsburgh in 1908. Pitt is one of the few universities and colleges established in the United States during the 18th century.

The University has 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges and is home to over 28,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Pitt receives research funding from the National Institute of Health and is the fifth largest recipient of federally sponsored, university, research funding in the U.S.
