School Overview
The University of Kentucky (UK) is located in Lexington, Kentucky. A public co-educational university, it is one of only two land-grant universities in the state. According to the U.S. News and World Report, UK is the highest ranked research university in Kentucky. It was founded in 1865 by John Bowman as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky. Today, the university is the largest in Kentucky by enrollment with 28,094 students enrolled as of Fall 2011.
UK boasted 4,600 first-year students in 2012, a record high. UK also is at a record high for its numbers of out-of state, international, Hispanic, and African-American students. UK strives for an international and diverse student population so they have a very selective admissions process. The students are divided into 93 undergraduate programs in 16 colleges, and 99 masters, 66 doctoral programs in a graduate school. It also has four professional programs. The University of Kentucky has fifteen libraries on campus. The largest of these is the William T. Young Library which is a federal depository. It hosts subjects like humanities, social sciences, and life sciences. Recently, UK has started focusing expenditures more and more on research (following a compact which was formed by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1997.) The directive declared that UK would become a Top 20 public research institution – in terms of the overall ranking that the university determines – by 2020.
