The main campus is located in Athens, Georgia, with others in Tifton, Griffin, Lawrenceville, and Atlanta. University of Georgia is also one of the nation’s oldest, public universities, originally founded in 1785 as the first, state-chartered school in the country.
As one of the top public institutions in the nation, the University of Georgia is designated as a Public Ivy university. It provides more than 140 academic programs across 18 schools and colleges. It is also a federal land grant, sea grant and space grant research institution, and is listed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “research university” with “very high activity.” In 2013, U.S. News & World Report listed Georgia as the 21st best public university nationwide.
The university has a vibrant campus environment. The university’s various campuses and satellites comprise roughly 40,000 acres throughout the state. The famous North Campus is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and the school’s thirteen libraries contain more than 4.5 million volumes, and one of the most extensive map collections in the U.S. There are also student research and residential campuses in Costa Rica, Italy, and at Oxford University in England.
The “Georgia Bulldogs” host one of the most competitive athletics programs in the nation. The intercollegiate sports teams play in Division 1 of the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference (SEC), of which Georgia is a founding member (1932). In more than one hundred years of competition, the Bulldogs varsity teams have won 39 national championships. The Georgia Redcoat Marching Band is among the most highly regarded marching bands in the country.
