Gallaudet University is a higher education institution for the deaf located in Washington D.C. It was founded in 1864 by federal charter and was the first school in the world to provide higher education and advanced studies for the hard of hearing and deaf. However, the school’s graduate program also accepts a small number of hearing students each year. Gallaudet University was named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a renowned pioneer in Deaf education and learning.
