School Overview
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), a component of the University of Texas System, was established in 1891. The school is located in Galveston, Texas, USA, which is about 50 miles south east of downtown Houston. UTMB is a health care complex which spans over 85 acres and includes seven hospitals, an assortment of centers and institutes, specialized clinics, and a medical school. There are 13,000 employees across these institutions. The medical school is the oldest medical school west of the Mississippi.
At the time of its establishment, it had only one building and fewer than 50 students. Today the campus has grown to include over 70 buildings and have an enrollment of over 2,500 students. The 84 acre campus includes three institutes for advanced study, four schools, seven on-site hospitals (including the affiliated Shriners Burns Hospital), a major medical library, and a comprehensive medical library, a network of clinics that provide the full range of specialized and primary care, and numerous research facilities.
It also has schools of nursing, medicine, allied health professions, an institute for medical humanities, and a graduate school of biomedical studies.
