The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), first established in 1917 as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is the flagship campus of the University of Alaska System, comprised of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Anchorage (the largest university), and the University of Alaska Southeast, located in the capital city of Juneau. Through Oregon State University, UAF participates in the sun-grant program. Along with five other universities, UAF helps research and develop bio-based energy alternatives that can be sustained and are friendly to the environment.
