A thesis statement is the
writer’s main point. The writer
asserts his or her point of view
within the thesis and provides
supporting arguments.

Introduction College students are
frequently required to write
persuasive essays. To support a
position, you must provide logical
arguments. During your
professional life, you’ll be
frequently required to persuade
others to your view point. When
writing a persuasive essay, you
must effectively utilize a skill
known as academic argument. To do
this, provide a brief introduction
that catches the reader’s
attention and an effective one
sentence thesis statement that
clearly states your position. The
thesis also summarizes the main
points that will be used to
support your assertion.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement:

  • Provides
    the position that you’ll take
    during the essay.
  • Organizes
    the main arguments that will
    be used to support your
    position.
  • Answers
    the question assigned by the
    instructor. In most cases, a
    thesis is your opinion. For
    example, a thesis provides
    your view point to a specific
    event, rather than an overview
    of what happened.
  • Presents
    an argument that can be
    disputed by others
  • A thesis
    is typically one sentence at
    the end of an introductory
    paragraph. The remainder of
    the essay will be devoted to
    supporting it with empirical
    evidence and other logical
    arguments.

When you receive an assignment
with unclear thesis statement
requirements, ask the instructor
for clarity. However, in any
essay, you should include a thesis
statement. Also, when developing a
thesis, ensure it answers the
question being asked. For example,
you could be assigned to support
your position about a
controversial subject, compare and
contrast two points of view, or
analyze a current event.

How do I get a thesis?

It usually takes time to develop a
thesis. Developing a thesis is not
the first step when writing an
essay. Before formulating a
thesis, conduct some research to
determine whether or not it’s
possible to support your
preliminary position. After you’ve
conducted some research and have
an idea of whether or not it’s
possible to support your position
with logical arguments, develop a
basic thesis with 2-3 arguments.
While writing the essay, the
thesis might change, so don’t
resist doing this when necessary.

Writers utilize various strategies
to enhance their understanding of
an issue, connect links between
multiple arguments, and adequately
explain the significance of the
subject they’re addressing. How do
I know if my thesis is strong?

Do not hesitate asking the
instructor or a peer tutor to
review your rough draft and offer
suggestions. When time is an
issue, you can improve your thesis
by following these suggestions:

  • Is the
    question being adequately
    answered?
    To determine
    this, review the question
    listed on the assignment sheet
    and read your thesis aloud to
    see if it matches.
  • Is the
    stance you’re taking
    debatable?
    Do not take
    an indisputable position. Be
    sure that it’s debatable. If
    not, you will end up writing
    an informative essay.
  • Is the
    thesis too generalized?

    Generalized thesis statements
    are ineffective. Your thesis
    should be very specific.
  • Does
    your thesis address a
    significant and interesting
    topic?
    If your thesis
    does not incite interest, the
    audience will be bored reading
    it.
  • Is my
    thesis consistent with the
    body of the essay?
    When
    these two components don’t
    match, the essay will not
    flow. Don’t hesitate to alter
    your thesis if this is the
    case.
  • Is the
    thesis clear?
    Don’t
    leave your position in
    question. The essay will be
    very difficult to read if the
    main point is unclear.

Example Thesis

In an American history class,
you’ve been assigned to write an
essay about the main cause of the
Civil War. The question being
asked is as follows: Describe the
issue that motivated the Union and
Confederate States to go to war.
The following is an example of an
ineffective thesis:

Many factors led to the war,
but the Confederate States and
the Union fought for different
reasons.

The question has been restated in
this example. Likewise, no
specific position is taken, and
there is no road map for the body
of the essay. If you’re unsure of
where to begin, determine the
underlying cause of the war and
how each side interpreted the
issue. The following is an example
of an effective thesis:

The North and South went to war
to defend economic interests
since the North relied on
Southern cotton, while the South
believed slave labor was
essential to the survival of its
economy.

This is an example of a working
thesis. A main cause and the
position of each side has been
identified. As you conduct
research, you might determine more
specific causes and decide to
alter the thesis.

Compare both thesis statements.
The second thesis identifies a
motivating factor for each side,
while the first one is general and
lacks specific arguments. When
developing a thesis, do not worry
about taking a position that will
please your instructor. He or she
is more interested in seeing how
effectively you can defend a
debatable position.
