The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina (also known as The Citadel), is a comprehensive state-supported college located in Charleston, South Carolina. One of six Senior Military Colleges in the U.S., it places emphasis on military discipline, academics and physical challenges.

The Citadel has 17 academic departments divided into five schools: Engineering; Science and Mathematics; Humanities and Social Sciences; Business Administration; and Education. There are 19 majors and 35 minors offered. The school also has an evening graduate program, The Citadel Graduate College, has 19 programs with concentrations in computer science, business, psychology and education.

The Citadel is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 2013, U.S. News & World Report tapped The Citadel as the top public institution in the Regional Universities –" South category and fourth out of all 92 universities in that category. The previous year, U.S. News ranked The Citadel as eighth best value in the Regional Universities –" South category.


Known as the Bulldogs, Citadel athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1936. Men compete in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, and rifle; women compete in soccer, volleyball, cross country, rifle, golf and indoor and outdoor track.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

The Citadel offers grants, loans, and scholarships, including cadet scholarships and veterans' benefits, to help students defray the cost of attendance. All applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Library System

The Daniel Library, renamed in honor of Charles E. Daniel and Robert Hugh Daniel, houses more than 200,000 volumes of material in addition to electronic access to thousands of journals. The campus archives and museum are also housed here, as well as special collections.

The library was originally named The Memorial Library and Museum when it opened in 1960. It was renamed in 1972 to honor the two lifelong benefactors.

Student Housing

Undergraduate students must live on campus all four years at The Citadel. Housing is provided in the following barracks: Murray Barracks, Padgett-Thomas Barracks, Law Barracks, Stevens Barracks and Watts Barracks.
