Not everything is bigger and better in Texas, like some people (mostly Texan’s) would lead you to believe, but there are few areas where Texas really stands out from the pack. The economy for starters. Few would disagree that Texas has one of the strongest economies in the nation. During the last U.S. recession Texas was one of only a few states that experienced ongoing growth notwithstanding the economic decline that hit the rest of nation. In fact, during that same time period Texas alone was responsible for nearly 50% of all job creation nationwide. Texas’s strong economy is result of the state’s pro-business, low tax, low regulation mentality (that many other state’s are just beginning to see as the formula to economic stability).

Texas is home to several of the nation’s largest cities, including Houston, and currently has a population of just over 30 million people. As you probably already surmised, Texas has very strong job market. In fact, qualified professionals from across the nation have been flocking to Texas in order take advantage of the opportunity that currently exists. The strongest job markets in Texas are located in it’s population centers, including, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso and Austin–the state’s capital.

One of the strongest job sectors in Texas can be found in health care. Health care professionals from just about every field are in high demand, this includes psychologists. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for practicing psychologists in Texas is about $65,000 to $85,000 a year (although this amount can very depending on your speciality). Ironically, clinical, counseling, and school psychologists are in highest demand but they typically receive lower pay than other psychology specialists. One of the upsides to practicing psychology in Texas is that the cost of living is relatively low compared with other states. You may only earn $70,000 a year in Austin, Texas compared to $95,000 a year in San Francisco, California but a house in Austin only costs $200,000 compared to $500,000+ in San Francisco.

Texas is also home to 90 accredited colleges and universities that offer a large selection of psychology programs. Whether you’re looking to earn an associate degree in counseling psychology, a bachelor’s degree in general psychology, or a Ph.D./PsyD in abnormal psychology you’ll find the perfect psychology program. Below you’ll find a comprehensive directory of psychology programs and schools located throughout the state of Texas.
