Tacoma is a popular urban port city located in Pierce County, Washington. The city is situated on the Puget Sound just 30 miles southwest of Seattle and about 30 miles northest of Olympia (Washington’s state capital). The city is also a located close to Mount Rainier National Park, a true marvel of natural beauty. It has an estimated population of nearly 200,000, is the third larest city in the state, and the second-largest in the Puget Sound region. It is also center of business activity for a South Puget Sound region that is home to over 1 million people.
While having vehicle is convenient, it is not a necessity in Tacoma. The city has a well developed public transportation systems that includes hundreds of buses, a commuter rail, light right, and several ferries. Pierce Transit is the public transity authority in Tacoma and the Pierce County area and responsible for managing the regions bus, shuttle, and vanpool services. Pierce Transit’s system is integrated with all other forms of transit in the area including trains and ferries. The majority of bus routes are operated at 30 to 60 minute intervals, while the three busiest routes (“trunk” routes) are served every 20 minutes around the clock.
Higher education opportunities are plentiful in Tacoma. The city is home to several four-year universities, including University of Washington’s Tacoma campus. There are also several two-year colleges in and around Tacoma, including Tacoma Community College and Bates Technical College that offer a variety of degree and professional training programs for working adults and career-oriented students.
