Founded in 1892, Strayer University is a private school initially named “Strayer’s Business College”. The College was first located in Baltimore, Maryland and was founded by Dr. Irving Strayer in order to help teach various business-related skills to previous farm workers. Strayer Business College was granted the accreditation to offer undergraduate degrees in 1969 and gained “University” status in 1998 from the District of Columbia Education Licensure Commission. The University still holds regional accreditation through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, most recently being re-accredited in 2012.

Strayer University’s main headquarters is located in Herndon, Virginia. However, its breadth does not end in Herndon as it also has 100 campus locations in 24 states. While there is no shortage of campuses to reach students, more than half of its 38,000 students choose to take advantage of Strayer’s vast online course offerings. Within the University, there are three schools through which degrees are administered: the School of Business, the School of Information Systems, and the School of Professional Studies. The university has 27 master’s and bachelor’s degree programs that can be completed solely online if desired. Strayer also has one MBA program, 5 associate’s programs and offers a number of certificate programs, as well.

At Strayer, the approach to financial aid is designed to assist prospective students in gaining as much aid as possible based on previous coursework completed. The program is called “Strayer University Graduation Fund” and aims to help pay for up to 25% of students tuition expenses. The university also readily accepts military benefits such as the Post 9/11 GI Bill, otherwise known as the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship, and partners with 9 different military programs to aid members in continuing to pursue higher education.
