All three colleges are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Another large university that has a satellite campus in Spokane is Eastern Washington University.
Private universities in Spokane include Gonzaga, Whitworth, ITT Tech and the University of Phoenix. Both Gonzaga and Whitworth were founded by religious organizations, Gonzaga by the Jesuits in 1887 and Whitworth by the Presbyterians in 1890. Public colleges include those in the Community Colleges of Spokane system. Spokane is one of the few major cities in the nation that does not have a main campus of a public university within its city limits. However, both Washington State University (WSU) and Eastern Washington University (EWU) run satellite offices at the Riverpoint Campus (a public educational facility), near downtown Spokane. EWU’s main campus is located about 15 miles southwest of Spokane in the city of Cheney, and WSU’s main campus is located in Pullman, about 65 miles south of Spokane.

While having a car is convenient, it isn’t absolutely necessary to get around in Spokane. Public mass transportation is provided by the Spokane Transit Authority (STA) which operates over 150 buses that provide service for roughly 250 square miles (all of Spokane). Currently STA is in the process of exploring the development of a High Performance Transit Network that will provide even better, more reliable public transportation for the growing city.
