School Overview

Southwestern Michigan College is a nationally accredited community college in Southwest Michigan that offers certificate and associate degrees in a variety of fields.

SMC ranks in the top 10 percent nationally for student course success and in the top 12 percent for transfer success. SMC students are eligible to transfer to almost any school in the country.

Employers throughout the community recognize SMC grads as well prepared for employment and specifically ask for SMC students especially in Nursing, Business, IT, and Advanced Technology.

SMC is committed to the student experience and is constantly upgrading its facilities and services to reflect that value. It recently created a Student Service Center to make it easier for students to handle college business, renovated its Niles Campus, and added apartment-style campus housing. More renovations for the Niles Campus are planned, and the Science building on the Dowagiac campus will be completely renovated by the end of 2014.

Student Housing

Southwestern Michigan College is one of only eight community colleges in Michigan with dorms. Each apartment-style suite has four private bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a full kitchen and living area. Each floor has a commons area with large screen TV and laundry. The three student housing buildings are connected by The Backyard, a large grassy area perfect for impromptu volleyball games, cookouts, outdoor movies, and roasting marshmallows around the Fire Pit.

Bachelor’s Degrees

Through partnerships with Ferris State University and Bethel College, students can earn bachelor’s degrees on the Dowagiac campus. The Ferris program is unique in that it allows students to take classes at SMC’s low tuition for three years and only one year at Ferris’ tuition.

The 240 acre Dowagiac campus features six miles of wooded trails for hiking, running, biking, or cross country skiing.

SMC’s main campus is five minutes outside of Dowagiac, MI. It is about 30 minutes from urban areas such as Kalamazoo and South Bend, IN; 45 minutes from Lake Michigan; and two hours from Chicago.

SMC recognizes the student experience as an important part of college and provides plenty of opportunities for students to have fun and connect with others. Gaming tournaments, student contests, movie nights, trips to Cedar Point and Chicago, intramural sports, and much more are scheduled throughout each semester.
