School Overview
The University of Southwest (USW), located in Hobbs, New Mexico, is a four-year private interdenominational college. In 1962, the school adopted it’s current name from the two-year Baptist institution it had been previously.
USW offers baccalaureate degrees in various fields of study and disciplines including business, administration, education, psychology, criminal justice, sports management and more. The university also has a prestigious graduate program that awards degrees in bilingual education, business, counseling and special education.
To satisfy the growth and development of the school, the Board of Trustees at USW voted to change the official name from College of the Southwest to “University of the Southwest” in March 2008. The transition from “College of Southwest” to “University of Southwest” took several years and for quite some time people continued referring to the university as College of the Southwest.
The USW Mustangs contend in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) which is part the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). USW offers student the opportunity to participate in various athletic teams and sports including basketball, cross country, soccer, tennis and track and field, baseball and volleyball.
