General Information
Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania is a public liberal arts
college located about 40 miles southwest of Harrisburg, PA, in the
rural community of Shippensburg. It offers both bachelor’s and master’s
degrees. It was established in 1871 and became a university in 1983, as
one of the 14 universities that make up the State System of Higher
Education of Pennsylvania. As of fall 2012, there were 6,712
undergraduate students and 1,012 graduate students. The school has more
than 300 faculty members and boasts a 20:1 student/faculty ratio.
Admissions Information
Shippensburg has a $45.00 application fee for both regular and
online applications. 71% of students who apply are accepted and 72% of
freshmen students return for their sophomore year. Students who apply
may request a fee waiver if it can be determined to be a hardship for
the student to pay it, but the request must come from the student’s
high school guidance counselor. Students who apply by mail can expedite
the application process by having their application, high school
transcripts, and SAT and/or ACT scores mailed together from their high
school. Transfer students must also provide scores from their previous
school(s). The application process can be checked online. Tuition is
currently $6,622 per year with $2,826 as the cost for fees for in-state
residents and $14,900 per year with $3,016 in fees.

The school offers MA Degrees for Applied History and
Teaching/Science Education and an MBA for Business Administration. They
offer MEd for Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood Education,
Reading, School Administration, and Special Education. They also offer
a Masters of Social Work degree in cooperation with Millersville (PA)
University, and an MPA in Public Administration. There are Certificate
programs for Couples and Family Therapy, Management Information
Systems, Principal’s Certification, Superintendent’s Letter of
Eligibility, and Supervisory Certificate I.
Online Degrees and Programs
On the graduate level, Shippensburg offers Certificate programs for
Advanced Studies in Business and Early Childhood Director Credential.
For undergraduate credit work, Shippensburg offers several classes that
can be taken online. Freshmen are required to have taken at least 12
credits and have a 2.0 GPA before applying for any online work.

Shippensburg is accredited by the Middle States Commission on
Higher Education, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business, the American Chemical Society, the National Council for the

the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Shippensburg accepts the following grants: PHEAA State Grant,
Federal PELL Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant,
and Federal TEACH Grant. They accept the following Loans: Federal
Direct Loan, Federal PLUS Loan, alternative student loans (such as a
non-federal loan from a private lending institution), and the Federal
Perkins Loan. There are numerous scholarships that students may apply
for on the freshman and upperclassmen levels, as well as athletic
scholarships and those from the PA State System of Higher Education
Foundation Scholarships.
Library System
Shippensburg has two libraries on campus. The Lehman Library is a
full service library and the Luhrs Library specializes in resources for
elementary education services.
Athletics
The Shippensburg Raiders compete at the NCAA Division II
intercollegiate level. They offer the following men’s sports: baseball,
basketball, cross country, football, track and field, soccer, swimming,
and wrestling. They offer the following women’s sports: basketball,
cross country, field hockey, track and field, lacrosse, soccer,
softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.
Student Housing
Shippensburg’s room rates for both in-state and out-of-state
students range from $4,180 to $8,858 and meal plans that range from
$2,900 to $4,398. If they wish, students can arrange for their own
roommates and rooms online. There are currently eight residence halls
available, with plans for more in the near future. The school also
offers a service to connect students to potential places to live off
campus.
