School Psychology Colleges and Programs

School psychologists utilize principles of educational and clinical psychology to treat students struggling with learning disabilities and behavioral problems. School psychologists learn about personality and learning theories, adolescent psychopathology, developmental disabilities, and childhood adolescent development during their formal education. School psychologists often evaluate teachers and make teaching improvement recommendations. School psychologists also conduct psychoeducational and psychological tests, counsel students with behavioral problems, and work with school administrators to create school environments where students can thrive.

State licensing boards typically require school psychologists to hold graduate degrees in counseling or psychology. Many school psychologists hold specialized master's degrees in school psychology (EdS), typically taking 3 years to complete. Before graduating, EdS students are required to complete a yearlong internship.

Aspiring school psychologists can prepare for graduate study by majoring in education, psychology, or counseling as undergraduates. Since school psychologists must be good communicators, students should also complete multiple communications and English courses.

Traditional school psychology programs prepare individuals to apply clinical and counseling psychology principles to the diagnosis and treatment of student behavioral problems. Programs typically includes in depth instruction in child and/or adolescent development; testing, observation and other procedures for assessing educational, intelligence, personality, and motor skill development; learning theory; identification and classification of disabilities and disorders affecting learning; therapeutic intervention strategies for students and families; supervised counseling practice; ethical standards; school psychological services planning; and applicable regulations.
