School Overview
San Jose State University, or San Jose State for short, is a large public university located in San Jose, California. Part of the California State University system, it is the oldest institution in that system, having been founded in 1857, and also claims the distinction as being one of the oldest public universities on the West Coast.
Physical Campus and Facilities
The 55-building campus is situated on 154 acres of land and is located in downtown San Jose. Given the age of the campus, the buildings are a mix of both modern and Victorian-era architecture.
The campus is home to an assortment of buildings that provide support for students in various ways. Some are dedicated to academic achievement and resources while others are dedicated to student activities. The Aquatic Center, for example, is home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool, which is open year-round. The Events Center Arena, which seats up to 5,000 people and is the venue for concerts, is also home to the University's athletics center. The athletics center itself houses weights and cardio equipment, basketball and racquetball courts, and holds fitness classes.
Academic Programs and Colleges
San Jose State is home to fifteen academic colleges/schools through which the University's 81 undergraduate and 65 graduate programs are administered to 31,000 students through various formats. Of the 31,000 students studying at the University, 25,000 are undergraduates while 5,500 are graduates.
Among the most impacted programs at the University, the business program, which claims 23% of the total student enrollment, engineering, and visual and performing arts were the top three most impacted. Other popular programs include nursing, education, psychology, and justice studies.
The University, like many others, is allocating resources to the development of an extensive online, extended campus learning platform known as International and Extended Studies. IES, as it is known, allows students to take courses via online delivery and allows international students the opportunity to study at the University.
Rankings and Distinctions
San Jose State is the recipient of a significant number of rankings and distinctions that supplant its position as a progressive, efficient, and modern institution.
U.S. News and World Report has ranked San Jose State as 8th among western regional universities which is an improvement from its previous position as 10th on the list. San Jose State’s business school holds accreditation from AACSB International which itself is a distinction held by less than 5% of business schools worldwide. The University’s engineering school is ranked as 2nd among public engineering programs and is ranked 13th worldwide.
The University has also been ranked as 20th in terms of educational value which assesses the projected 30-year return-on-investment for alumni.
Research
Out of the 23 institutions that are part of the California State University system, San Jose State ranks 2nd with respect to research and development expenditure. The University holds research and development relationships with NASA, Moffett Field, Cisco Networking, and the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.
San Jose State is also the vanguard for conducting high-profile, large-scale market and consumer research surveys, which are administered through the California Consumer Confidence Survey.
Recently, a San Jose State professor and his students designed a zero emissions vehicle, which made national headlines.
