School Overview
In 1840, Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and five Sisters of Providence journeyed to Indiana from France to help establish a Catholic academy for women. After enduring many hardships, these sisters opened Saint Mary’s Female Institute (informally known as the Academy) on July 4, 1841. In 1928, the Academy was incorporated as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. In 2005, SMWC opened access for men to its online undergraduate programs and in 2015, opened its doors for men to attend their on-campus programs.
