School Overview
St. John’s University, New York is a private Roman Catholic university in New York City, New York. Also known as SJU, it is a coeducational four-year school with an emphasis on doctoral and research programs. The undergraduate programs at SJU focus on the Arts and Sciences, as well as professional training in a variety of fields.
St. John’s is composed of five separate undergraduate schools and six graduate schools. In 2011, U.S. World News named it a Tier One University. The school enrolls approximately 16,000 undergraduate students per year, and over 5,000 graduate students. SJU students hail from all over the U.S. and more than 115 countries around the world.
St. John’s is an academically rigorous school that attracts highly qualified faculty. As of 2010, 38% of students graduated in four years, while 59% graduated in six years. In the same survey, one-year retention was just below 80%. Out of SJU’s 1,400 part-time and full-time faculty, 60% have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree, while over 30% have Master’s degrees. There are 17 students for every instructor.
St. John’s University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Online Degrees and Courses
St. John’s University now offers various online degree and distance learning course options for students that have been accepted to the university’s main program. Most of the university’s online degrees andd courses are “hybrid” programs with have both online and on-site requirements.
The university’s current online degree programs are offered at the associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s levels. Programs include master’s degrees in social justice, library science, criminal justice, business, accounting, teaching, and education. Many online advanced certificate programs in education are also available.
Individual courses are also offered online for students pursuing campus-based undergraduate and graduate degrees at St. John’s University.
