Rust College is a private, four-year liberal arts higher education institution in Holly Springs – a city located in the state of Mississippi just 30 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. Rust is a historically black college that is affiliated with the Methodist Church. It was founded in 1968, is the second-oldest private college in Mississippi, and one of oldest historically black colleges in the United States.

Academics

The college is divided into five academic divisions, which include the Division of Humanities, Division of Business, Division of Social Sciences, Division of Education, and Division of Science and Mathematics. Through its academic divisions, Rust College awards two-year associate’s and four-year bachelor’s degrees in various fields of study, such a business, humanities, education, and sciences, among many others. The most popular fields of study at Rust are business administration, biology, computer science, and general studies.

With an admissions rate of 25%, Rust is considered a fairly selective college. The U.S. News & World Report categorizes Rust as a “less selective” higher education institution. The college has total an annual enrollment of just 1,200 students and has a student-to-faculty ration of roughly 19:1. About half of Rust professors have either Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field of expertise.

Campus

Rust’s main campus (and only campus) is located in Holly Springs. Even though the city is located in Mississippi, it lies within the Memphis, Tennessee metro area. Many of the school’s students come from both Mississippi and Tennessee. Most students at Rust live in on-campus housing. The college has 5 student dormitories which house up to 900 students. Each dorm is gender specific.

Athletics

Student athletes and sports teams at Rust are collectively known as the “Bearcats”. The college competes as an independent member in the National College Athletic Association’s Divisions III. Sports offered at Rust include baseball (men only), softball (women only), basketball, cross country, tennis, track & field and volley ball.
