Psychoanalysis Programs

Sigmund Freud developed psychoanalysis theory and treatment. The theory of psychoanalysis is based on the belief that unconscious, irrational ambitions motivate human behavior. Psychoanalysis is still used to effectively treat patients. In fact, current research is being conducted in this field.

Some of Freud’s more sensational theories relating to the subconscious, such as the Oedipal complex, have been discredited, but Freud’s theories about defensiveness, projection, and transference are still held in high regard within the psychological community. Counselors and psychologists often utilize psychoanalysis to get patients to be introspective about their attitudes and behaviors.

Modern neuropsychological research is being combined with traditional psychoanalytical theories to better understand the human mind and subconscious. This field of study is known as neuropsychoanalysis.

Many schools offer degree programs in psychoanalysis. Students admitted to graduate-level psychoanalysis programs typically hold undergraduate degrees in general or a specialized field of psychology. It usually takes 4 years to complete an accredited psychoanalytic program. Students enrolled in these programs receive extensive training in psychoanalytic theory and treatments.
