Palo Alto is a city located in north-central California, in Santa Clara County. Literally translated its name means “tall tree” and the city is named after a very tall coastal redwood tree. The city is located among several other cities and areas, including Stanford, Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Menlo Park and Mountain View. Currently the city has roughly 65,000 residents but is much greater when taking into account all the professionals that commute to the city on a daily basis.
Palo Alto is the base for several large domestic and international corporations and high-tech companies, including Hewlett Packard, IDEO, Palantir Technoloies, VMware, Ning and Tesla Motors. Other companies, including Google, Facebook, Paypal, Apple Inc and Logitech got their start in Palo Alto. The city is also home to Palo Alto University and part of Stanford University runs into Palo Alto.
Palo Alto University (formerly the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology) is a regionally accredited higher education institution with several hundred students and a staff of roughly 120. Most of the university’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs focus on psychology.
Stanford University’s campus runs into Palo Alto. In fact, Stanfords medical center and shopping center are technically inside the city limits of Palo Alto.
