From major medical universities to local community colleges to hospital diploma programs, Ohio offers a diverse selection of nursing schools and programs for students to choose from. At Ohio technical schools, community colleges and hospital-based nursing programs, aspiring students can earn an associates or practical nursing degree in preparation for entry-level career opportunities in nursing. Bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in nursing can are offered at Ohio’s 4-year colleges and universities.

Due to an ongoing shortage of qualified nurses, the demand for nurses in Ohio is strong. In addition, Ohio has a thriving healthcare economy with a large number of health facilities employing thousands of nurses statewide. Major employers include level I trauma hospitals in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Youngstown and Toledo, as well as level II and III trauma hospitals in Xenia, Canton and several other cities throughout the state. Together these hospitals and many more are constantly adding new nurses to their staff. Other facilities including outpatient surgical centers, nursing homes, urgent care centers, community health clinics and retirement centers ensure that there is always strong demand for nursing professionals.

A recent survey performed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that there are slightly more than 120,000 nurses working in Ohio earning an average salary of $60,590. For nurse practitioners and nurse specialists such as nurse anesthetists who earn advanced degrees, annual salaries of $80,000 to $150,000 are not uncommon.

Not only is Ohio a great place to work, it’s also a great place to earn a nursing degree. With over 100 nursing schools, Ohio offers one of the largest selections of approved nursing programs of any state in the nation. In addition, Ohio offers students the Nurse Loan Repayment Program, administered by the Ohio Board of Regents, which makes financing a nursing degree affordable and realistic if you’re willing to work as a nurse or nurse educator in Ohio upon completion of your program. To be eligible for the Nurse Loan Repayment Program, candidates must be enrolled at least half-time in an approved Ohio nursing school. For full reimbursement of tuition and other education expenses, nurses must commit to working in Ohio upon completion of their degree for at least five years.
