Northwestern State University of Louisiana, also known as NSU, is a public university with its main campus found in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The school is under the University of Louisiana System, and has a nursing campus located in Shreveport with other locations in Leesville and Alexandria. Founded in 1884, NSU has a rich band of folklore perpetuated throughout its interesting history, and boasts a resident spirit named Isabella who purportedly walks about the Old Women’s gym after her previous inhabitations had either been torn down or burned to the ground.
The impressive academic history of the school shows that it joined NASA’s “JOVE” program, and was initially one of only six universities to be involved in this unique experience, allowing students to collaborate with scientists from NASA to evaluate and research the Space Shuttle Columbia mission in 1996. The campus also houses the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, a high-school funded through the state and open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.
The university has more than 10,000 students currently enrolled, studying in over 50 different programs, and awards associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in various disciplines. All accreditable programs are currently fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and NSU has an 85% acceptance rate for applicants.
The athletic teams at NSU are known as the Demons, or Lady Demons for the women. The school’s mascot is known as Vic the demon, and the colors are purple and white. The teams play within the Southland Conference as an NCAA Division I school. There are 12 athletic teams between baseball, cross country, football, basketball, track and field, soccer, and tennis, among a few others.
The on-campus housing options are broken up into three communities called University Columns, University Place, and Varnado hall. University Place offers living learning communities to students, while University Columns grants entertainment and events to keep college living interesting for residents. Varnado hall is a tight-knit community of students focused on building friendship at NSU. Most living accommodations at NSU are fully-furnished and include a great deal of amenities perfectly suited to student life, including lounge-areas and study rooms. Most utilities payments are included with the monthly rent.
The US News and World Report placed Northwestern State University of Louisiana as 92nd in Regional Universities (South), and found that class sizes were relatively small, with only 10% of classes having 50 enrolled students or more.
The university is eligible to disperse all manner of federal financial aid to qualified students who have applied through the appropriate channels, and maintain satisfactory academic progress. These types of aid include Pell Grants, SEOG Grants, Federal Work Study, Federal Perkins Loans, and the Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan. The University also facilities a range of scholarship opportunities that can be applied for through the NSU website. These scholarships are available for spring and fall semesters only, and do not apply the summer courses.
