School Overview
The University at Buffalo, State University of New York is a public research university with campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York. The school is commonly referred to as University at Buffalo (UB) or SUNY Buffalo, and it has the largest student body of the 64 SUNY institutions, with more than 28,000 students.
UB is routinely ranked among the top research universities in the nation, and it has the most research funding in the SUNY system. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education designates UB as a Research University with “very high activity” (RU/VH). The Center for Measuring University Performance has repeatedly listed UB in the top 30 research universities in the country. Since 1989, UB has been a member of the Association of American Universities, which represents premier research universities in North America.
UB offers more than 100 bachelor’s degrees, over 200 master’s degrees, 84 doctorates, and professional training in 10 fields of study. With 13 separate colleges, UB students can pursue a variety of highly-ranked academic programs, including the largest state-operated medical school, and New York’s only state schools in law, pharmacology, and architecture and urban planning. The Kiplinger Report, which ranks the best value of American universities, ranked UB 27th for out-of-state students, and 38th for in-state residents.
UB was listed #51 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 ranking of public universities and #106 among all universities nationally. Times Higher Education listed it 198th in “World University Rankings”, an elite list for institutions of higher learning throughout the world.
UB boasts some very prestigious alumni, including a United States President, a Prime Minister, Pulitzer Prize recipients, Nobel Laureates, Rhodes Scholars, and even some Emmy winners.
