New Mexico is one of those states that goes unnoticed by most people, including national news organizations. You’re always hearing about what’s happening in Texas, Ariziona and other surrounding states but rarely do you hear about New Mexico.

New Mexico is truly a great state worth getting to know. And if you’re considering a career in New Mexico or attending school there, we think you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. Most of New Mexico is semi-arid to arid, but the state also has areas of continental and apline climates, and is covered by moutains, high plains and picturesque desert landscapes.

With a little over 2 million full-time residents, the state is the 36th most populous state in the nation, but the 6th least densely populated of all 50 states. Most of its citizens are concentrated in a few major cities including Alburquerque (population 545,852), Las Cruces (population 97,618) and Santa Fe (87,521). Most job opportunities within the state are also found in one of these three cities.

Not surprisingly, given its proximity to the border, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanic Americans, including recent immigrants from Latin America and descendants of Spanish Colonists. It also has the second-highest number of Native Americans, after Alaska.

The mean annual salary for psychologists in New Mexico is roughly $59,000 to $75,000 a year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010 data). Surprisingly, New Mexico is among the states with the largest number of practicing psychologists. Job opportunities for aspiring psychology professionals and students can be found with colleges, universities, government agencies and private companies. As previously mentioned, job openings will be most plentiful in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces.

Currently there are about 15 schools in New Mexico that offer accredited psychology programs. These include New Mexico State University, in Las Cruces, University of New Mexico, in Alburquerque, and College of Santa Fe, in Santa Fe to name just a few.
