The state of Mississippi was named after the great Mississippi River (not the other way around) that extends along the entire western border of the state. With Civil War battlefields, Civil Rights landmarks and old cotton plantations dotting the landscape, Mississippi has a deep rich heritage and history. In 2005, Mississippi, along with several surrounding states was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. This resulted in a large increase in the need for health care services, including nursing.

Mississippi has one of the lowest per capita personal incomes of any state in the nation. However, it also has the nation’s lowest cost of living. Real estate, food, as well as many other costs of living are substantially lower in Mississippi than in other states. For nurses, this is good news! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean hourly wage for nurses in Mississippi is just around $30 an hour. While this isn’t great, as a nurse your paycheck will go a lot further in Mississippi than it will in most other states. Furthermore, there is a shortage of nurses in Mississippi and jobs are plentiful.

Currently there are over 25 nursing schools in Mississippi providing approved nursing programs. To practice as a nursing in the state you’ll need to earn a nursing degree or diploma from an accredited program and then pass a state-mandated exam to receive your license. To become a licensed practical nurse (the easiest way to get into the industry) all you need to have is a diploma or certificate from an accredited program. To become a registered nurse (RN) you must have either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree (BSN) from an accredited program. Today, more and more nursing students are opting for a BSN, as opposed to an associate degree, since earning a BSN opens up a lot more job and career opportunities in the field.
