Mankato, a modest town with a population of 53,000, is home to Minnesota State University, Manakato (MSU). The town is located about 75 miles (121 km) southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The university is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and University System (MnSCU). In addition to its main campus, the universit has two remote satellite locations, one in Edina and the other in Owatonna. With a student body of over 15,000, the school is the third-largest in the state (as of Fall, 2011). Employing over 600 full-time faculty, MSU has student to faculty ratio of 28 to 1. MSU boasts a large selection of undergraduate programs (158) and graduate programs (82) and was the first university in America to offer a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Forensics.

The Mankato branch of Minnesota State University currently offers 158 undergraduate degrees, 82 graduate degrees, and 16 graduate-prep programs. MSU programs are supported by six academic colleges: Social and Behavioral Sciences, Science, Business, Allied Health and Nursing, Engineering and Technology, and Education. MSU offers doctorate degrees in psychology, nursing practice, and education.
