School Overview
Michigan State University, locally
referred to as MSU, is a public university
in East Lansing, Michigan that is
classified as a "high research activity"
institution. MSU is internationally
recognized as one of the top universities
in the fields of supply chain management,
operations and logistics, engineering,
economics, osteopathic medicine, fisheries
and wildlife, criminal justice, forestry,
business, packaging, hospitality business
management, telecommunications, and teacher
education.
MSU also has a well-known study abroad
program, which just happens to be the
largest study abroad program of any
single-campus, higher education institution
in the United States. In total, MSU offers
a staggering 200 study abroad programs in
over 60 foreign countries and in every
continent worldwide. MSU even has a study
abroad program in Antarctica. As of 2013,
MSU had nearly 48,000 students and 3,000
faculty and staff, making it the 8th
largest higher education institution in
the United States. MSU offers a
comprehensive selection of bachelor's,
master's and doctorate degree programs, as
well as several certificate programs.

programs online.
Michigan State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Athletics
Michigan State’s Spartans compete in the
NCAA Division I-A, with 12 varsity sports
for men and 13 for women. The school
participates in the Big Ten Conference
with all varsity sports except ice
hockey, which competes in the Central
Collegiate Hockey Association.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
The MSU Office of Financial Aid celebrated
its 50th birthday in 2013. Types of aid
include loans, grants, work-study,
education savings plans, education tax
credits and the Michigan Indian Tuition
Waiver.
Rankings
The Academic Ranking of World Universities
ranks Michigan State as 96th worldwide,
while U.S. News & World Report places
the school at 72nd in the U.S. According
to the 2011 QS World University Rankings,
the school ranks 164th internationally.
U.S. News & World Report has also ranked Michigan State’s
graduate-level secondary education,
elementary education, and industrial and
organizational psychology programs number
one for the last 14 years.
Student Housing
Freshmen at Michigan State are required to
live on-campus. The school is divided into
six residence hall neighborhoods, with
15,000 residents per year in 25
halls. Students are also encouraged to
participate in academic living-learning
programs that offer a like-minded
community of peers.
