School Overview
Also known as Mass Maritime Academy or MMA, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a coeducational state college that offers undergraduate degrees in maritime-related fields in addition to graduate degrees. The second oldest state maritime academy in the country, MMA is located on Taylor’s Point in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, and operates a training ship called the USTS Kennedy.
Massachusetts Maritime Academy was founded in 1891 as the Massachusetts Nautical Training School. It was authorized by the Massachusetts Legislature to grant the Bachelor of Science degree in 1946. Today, it offers bachelor’s degrees in Marine Engineering, Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, Marine Transportation, International Maritime Business, Emergency Management, Facilities Engineering, and Energy Systems Engineering, as well as master’s degrees in Emergency Management and Facilities Management.

The academy is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
Athletics
Known as the Buccaneers, Massachusetts Maritime Academy sports teams include baseball, men and women’s cross country, men and women’s crew, men and women’s soccer, softball, football, men and women’s lacrosse, co-ed outdoor track & field, co-ed sailing, and women’s volleyball. The Buccaneers compete in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference, and the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Massachusetts Maritime Academy offers loans, grants, federal work-study and scholarships to help students defray the cost of attendance. All applicants are expected to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Library System
The ABS Information Commons encompasses 42,000 square feet, with 56 public computers, more than 140,000 online books, more than 52,000 online journals and a $2 million full mission bridge simulator. The building is LEED Platinum rated based on its sustainability, water efficiency, air quality and other factors.
Student Housing
One hundred percent of freshmen live on campus and most continue to do so throughout their time at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
