With a population of over 740,000, Louisville is the largest city in state of Kentucky. While once a famous shipping port, today Kentucky is best known for the Kentucky Derby, one of three yearly horse races making up the Triple Crown. Downtown Louisville is located directly south of the Ohio River, and immediately southeast of the Falls of Ohio.

Louisville is home to several higher education institutions including five four-year universities, the University of Louisville, Spalding University, Bellarmine University, Sullivan University, and Simmons College of Kentucky, a two-year community college and several business and technical schools.

One of Louisville’s largest universities, the University of Louisville, is known world-wide for several noteworthy accomplishments including several of the first hand transplants, and the first wireless artificial heart transplant. The University of Louisville’s Health Sciences Center located in Downtown Louisville is adding a large medical research facility to the city’s old Haymarket site, which is estimated to produce over 10,000 new high paying jobs over the next decade.

Louisville is also home to two major graduate-professional level schools of religion which include the Southern Baptist Theology Seminary, with over 2000 students, and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

According to the most recent U.S. Census, over nearly 22% of all adults in Louisville hold a 4-year college degree.
