With a population of just under 20,000 residents, the city of Leesburg is a relatively small city situated in between Lake Griffin and Lake Harris in central Florida. Leesburg belongs to the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metro Area which has a population of nearly 2.2 million. The city has a growing economy and has become popular haven for retirees. Lake-Sumter State College was founded in 1962 as a community college. In 2012, the school’s name was changed from Lake-Sumter Community College to Lake-Sumter State College to reflect its new status as a four-year bachelor degree awarding institution. In addition to its main campus in Leesburg, Lake-Sumter State College has branch campuses in Sumterville and Clermont.
With roughly 200 students, Beacon College is relatively small yet highly specialized higher education institution for students with ADHD, dyslexia and related learning disorders. The colleges offers undergraduate associate and bachelor degree programs in Human Services, Psychology, Business Management and Computer Information Systems. The school is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
