Laredo, Texas is situated on the north bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas, directly across from Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The most recent census puts the city’s population at just under 240,000. The bulk of the city’s economy is based on trade with its neighbor Mexico. The city serves as a vital international transportation hub between the United States and Mexico.
First established as a villa in 1755, Laredo quickly grew into the capital of the Republic of Rio Grande (an independent nation that was never officially recognized) and today is one of the most imporant inland ports on the US-Mexico border.
Laredo has two popular professional sports teams: the Laredo Heat (soccer team) and Bucks (an ice hockey team). It is also home to Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University (TAIMU), a co-educational public university within the Texas A&M University System.
