Lake Superior State University, also referred to locally as Lake Superior State, Lake State or LSSU, is a public university located in the northeastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the city of Sault Ste. With a total annual enrollment of roughly 3,000 students, it’s Michigan’s smallest public university. Given its promixity to the city of Ontario, Canada, many of its students are Canadian. Due to its close relationship with its neighbor to the north, LSSU flies both the American and Canadian flags.

LSSU offer several popular academic programs but some of its most popular include engineering, fisheries and wildlife management, environmental sciences, chemistry, geology, teacher education, nursing, business administration, criminal justice and fire science. LSSU is also the only school in the state to offer an accredited degree in environmental health. Other popular undergraduate degree programs at LSSU include legal and paralegal studies, recreation management, forensic sciences, and business management.

While LSSU offers master’s degree programs and certificates, it is primarily an undergraduate institution that grants associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. LSSU also offers several educational programs through a joint partnership with Algoma University and Sault College, both located in Sault Ste. Maria, Ontario. In addition to its main campus in Sault Ste. Michigan, LSSU has satellite campuses and learning centers in Escanaba, Gaylord, Petoskey, and most recently in Dearborn.
