School Overview
Florida Gateway College (abbreviated FGC), formerly Lake City Community College, is a four-year, co-educational state college located in Lake City, Florida. It is a member of the Florida College System, a consortium of nearly thirty state and community colleges throughout Florida which represents over 900,000 students. FGC offers a large selection of 2-year associate degrees, as well as a few four-year bachelor’s degrees in various fields of study from landscape architecture to police science to business management. One of the newest programs at FGC is the RN to BSN degree for registered nurses who already have an associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited school.
FGC was founded in 1947 as a forestry school called Columbia Forestry School. In 1961 the institution was re-chartered as a junior college (Lake City Community College) and in 2008 it was renamed Florida Gateway College. FGC offer academic degrees, occupational training programs and adult/continuing education courses. Total annual enrollment at Florida Gateway is approximately 1000 full-time students and 2,000 part-time students. The college is administered by a staff of roughly 210 faculty and instructors.
While the college offers a large selection of programs, some of the popular fields of study include Nursing, Emergency Medical Technology (EMT), Corrections and Liberal Arts & Sciences. Students who pursue the Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts at FGC typically do so in preparation to transfer to a four-year college or university where they can earn a bachelor’s degree.
In addition to a two-year associate degrees, FGC also offers several one-year career preparation programs. One of the most popular tracks at FGC is the 1-year cosmetology program which prepares students for the Florida state cosmetology exam required to become a licensed cosmetologist. The cosmetology program offers day-time, evening and weekend classes.
