The Kendall College of Art and Design, locally referred to as Kendall, is a college of visual arts and one of 8 academic colleges located within Ferris State University (FSU) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was founded in 1928 by Helen M. Kendall as a memorial to her deceased husband and as a reflection of their love and belief in the importance of the arts. With only 35 students, the college opened its doors in 1931. Today the college enrolls over 1,400 new students each year.

The college offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in various fields of study, but mostly in Fine Arts.

Academics

Kendall offers bachelor degree programs in Art History, Art Education, Digital Media, Collaborative Design, Fashion Design, General Fine Art Studies, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Metals/Jewelry Design, Medical Illustration, Painting, Sculpting, and Photography. Kendall offers a core curriculum to new students which includes introductory courses for their major as well as “foundation” courses in the arts. Entering students are also required to take courses in the Sciences, Humanities, and Art History. Upon completion of all core courses, students’ studies will focus on major courses and electives.

While Kendall focuses on undergraduate education, they also offer several respected master’s degree programs. Master’s degrees include a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), a Master of Art Education (MAE), and a Mater of Businesss Administration (MBA) which addresses business related design issues.

In addition to traditional college classes, Kendal also offers a dual enrollment (DE) program that enables high school students to take college courses while completing high school and non-credit design courses for both children and adults within the community.
