School Overview
Located in Manhattan, Kansas and commonly referred to as K-State, Kansas State University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Kansas. K-State was originally titled Kansas State Agricultural College and has a long-standing interest in agriculture. K-State also offers a variety of other academic programs and operates two additional campuses: the College of Technology and Aviation in Salina, Kansas, and the Olathe Innovation Campus in Olathe, Kansas. The Olathe campus conducts academic research through Kansas Bioscience Park, where graduate students research animal health, food safety and security, bioenergy, and plant science. With its many research opportunities, K-State has been classified as a High-Research University (RU/H) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
Academic Colleges and Degree Programs
K-State offers more than 250 undergraduate majors including programs within the colleges of agriculture, planning and design, technology and aviation, engineering, veterinary medicine, architecture, technology and aviation, arts and sciences, human ecology, education, and business administration. As a member of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools, K-State offers over 60 Master’s degree programs, over 40 Doctorate programs, and over 20 graduate certificates.
Alumni and Rankings
Since 1986, K-State has had more recipients of Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, Udall, and Goldwater scholarships than any other school in the United States. In addition to producing an extraordinary number of international scholars, K-State has the largest number of CASE/Carnegie Professors of the Year than any other public research university in the United States. Additionally, K-State is ranked 135th among national universities according to U.S. News and World Report.
Enrollment
K-State’s enrollment continues to grow, with the most recent student population totaling over 24,000 students. K-State is also the location of the Kansas Beta chapter, part of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
Distance Education and Online Programs
K-State offers a pretty extensive selection of online degrees and distance learning programs including online bachelor’s degrees, online master’s degree, online Ph.D. degrees, and online certificates, minors, and professional development courses.
Athletics
Known as the Wildcats, K-State is part of NCAA’s Division 1 and the Big 12 Conference. In the 2012-2013 school year, K-State became the second Big 12 school to win conference titles in men’s basketball, football, and baseball in the same year.
