Formerly Southwest Missouri State
University, and presently also known as
MSU or Mo State, Missouri State University
is a public univversity located in
Springfield, Missouri. Founded in 1905, it
is the state’s second largest university
and one of two degree-granting
institutions within the Missouri State
University System. The other is a two-year
campus in West Plains, Missouri.

The Carnegie Foundation classifies MSU as
one of six master’s colleges and
universities in the state; it was ranked
53rd of the Midwestern regional
universities by the 2012 U.S. News and
World Report.

Accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools and
the American Association of State Colleges
and Universities, MSU offers more than 150
undergraduate majors and more than 45
graduate programs. In 2009, the university
awarded nearly 4,100 degrees.

Athletics
Known as the Bears, MSU sports teams play
in the NCAA Division I. Teams are members
of the Missouri Valley Conference for all
sports except football, which belongs to
the Missouri Valley Football Conference,
men’s swimming and diving, which belongs
to the Mid-American Conference, and field
hockey, which belongs to the Mid-American
Conference.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
MSU offers grants, loans, scholarships and
work-study to help students defray the
cost of attendance. All applicants must
complete the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid.

Library System
The Springfield campus has the Meyer and
Haseltine libraries, while the Mountain
Grove campus has the Evans and Barbe
libraries. The West Plains campus has the
Garnett Library, while the China campus
has the Dalian Library.

Student Housing There are nine
residence halls on the MSU campus: Wells
House, Freudenberger House, Woods House,
Blair-Shannon House, Hammons House,
Hutchens House, Scholars House, Kentwood
Hall and Sunvilla Tower.
