Founded in 1912, and located in unincorporated Wood County, Texas, is Jarvis Christian College, a historically black college affiliated with the Disciples of Christ, a Christian denomination. Jarvis Christian College is a four-year coeducational independent college.

This college maintains a large regional collection of biological specimens that are concentrated on the herbarium and entomology collections. This collection is so large that it is displayed in Frost Hall, which is over 10,000 square feet. Jarvis Christian College also has minor holdings that are related to land use history and natural history.
