With just over 830,000 residents, Jacksonville is the largest city in the state of Florida. It is also the primary city in the Jacksonville Metro Area which has a population of 1.3 million. Several higher education institutions are located Jacksonville, including the University of North Florida (UNF) a public university which was founded in 1972. Since leaving office in 2003, John Delaney, Jacksonville’s former mayor, as been the president at UNF.

Another popular four-year institution located in Jacksonville is Jacksonville University (JU). JU is a private university that was founded in 1934 as a two-year college (Jacksonville Junior College) and then became a four-year in 1958 when it started offering bachelor degree programs. Jacksonville University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is a member of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida.

Edward Waters College, is a private historically black college that was founded in 1866. It is the oldest historically black college in the state and is an affiliate of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The college offers a comprehensive selection of bachelor’s degrees and is a fully accredited higher education institution.

Florida State College at Jacksonville, sometimes referred to as “Florida State”, is one of Florida’s premier public institutions of higher learning and is a member of the Florida College System, a group of twenty-eight public state colleges and community colleges that represent over 900,000 students statewide. Florida State offers a comprehensive selection of 2-year associate’s degrees and 4-year bachelor’s degrees in various fields of study and disciplines. In addition to its campus in Jacksonville the university has three other physical locations that together server over 81,000 students.

The University of Florida‘s J. Hillis Miller Health Science Center, based in Gainesville, has a major teaching hospital (its second campus) and related facilities in Jacksonville–which together serve over 6,000 students and aspiring health care professionals.

Jacksonville is also home to several other colleges and universities including Jones College, Florida Coastal School of Law and The Art Institute of Jacksonville. Schools located in the surrounding area, but not within Jacksonville city limits, include Flagler College in St. Augustine and St. Johns River State College in Palatka, Florida.
