Iowa State University of Science and
Technology is a public, research university
located in Ames, Iowa.  Commonly
known as Iowa State University (ISU), the
school is a land- and space-grant
institution that has graduated many
noteworthy individuals, including
astronauts, scientists, senators, a U.S.
Vice President, and Nobel and Pulitzer
Prize winners.  Before 1959, the
University was called the Iowa State
College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.

ISU has been recognized by the Carnegie
Foundation as an RU/VH, or a research
university with “very high research
activity.”  The institution has
membership in the Big 12
Conference, Universities Research
Association, and the Association of American Universities (AAU).

Iowa State has been a coeducational
institution since its establishment in
1858.  The school is renowned for its
research and curricula in engineering,
home economics, extension, and
agriculture, and created the first public
school for veterinary medicine in the
nation in 1879.  The country’s first
Statistical Laboratory was founded by ISU
in 1933.

ISU is accredited by the Higher Learning
Commission.

Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

U.S. News & World Report ranks
ISU as one of the best 50 public
institutions in the country.  Its
science, agriculture, and engineering
programs are also nationally
recognized.  The aerospace
engineering program ranks 13th among
public institutions whose highest degree
is a doctorate.  The chemical and
civil engineering programs are both ranked
20th among all schools nationwide, while
the materials engineering program
is ranked 17th best.  The journalism
school is also one of the best in the
nation.

Online Degrees and Programs

ISU offers online degrees and certificates
in the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences, the College of Engineering, the
College of Human Sciences, the College of
Business, and the College of Liberal
Arts.  A majority of the online
degrees are offered at
the graduate level.

College of Business

The Iowa State University MBA is an intensive two-year program with a unique delivery of the core curriculum. Students progress through the lock-step classes within a cohort of colleagues, learning and sharing experiences together. Teamwork is an essential component of the program. Professional development is also heavily emphasized, featuring required professional skills courses and individual appointments with the Director of Graduate Career Services that begin during the first week of classes. As a result, the Iowa State MBA program has been ranked in the top 10 for job placement rates three years in a row, with over 96% of graduates accepting job offers within 3 months of graduation.

Foreign Students

Students who do not speak English as their
primary language are offered the chance to
take Intensive English and Orientation
Program courses offered in grammar,
reading, oral communication, writing, and
business.  These courses not only
help advance English proficiency, but also
prepare students for English proficiency
exams.

Departments, Colleges, and Schools

ISU offers more than 100 undergraduate
degree programs, 115 master’s degree
programs, one professional degree in
veterinary medicine, and 83 doctoral
programs. These programs are split into
eight colleges.

  • Business
  • Agriculture and Life Sciences
  • Design
  • Engineering

Financial Aid

ISU administers federal grants and loans
including the Pell Grant, TEACH grant,
Perkins loans, and PLUS loans.
Work-study positions are available for
students demonstrating financial need which
gives students the opportunity to make
an hourly wage, many times in the field of study for the student.  Scholarships are
offered through a variety of departments and
programs across the university.

Library

The W. Robert and Ellen Sorge Parks
Library is one of the 100 largest in the
nation and houses more than 2.6 million
books.  An e-Library and Veterinary
Medical Library are also available for
student use.

Athletics

The University’s athletic teams are known
as the Cyclones and they participate in
the Big 12 Conference.  Sixteen men’s
and women’s teams compete in 12
intercollegiate sports including football,
basketball, volleyball, and
wrestling.
The women’s basketball team is considered
one of the best in the country with three
conference titles, five Sweet Sixteen
appearances, and two Elite Eight
bids.  The women’s volleyball team
has also experienced a significant amount
of success, appearing in NCAA semifinals a
number of times.  The men’s wrestling
team has won eight NCAA championships and
three conference tournament titles.

Nineteen residence halls are operated on
campus and are divided into “associations”
depending on their location.  The
Union Drive Association is located in the
western portion of campus and has four
residence halls, including Friley Hall,
which is one of the
largest in the country.  On the east
side of campus is Richardson Court
