Industrial and Organizational Psychology Colleges and Programs

College Degree Finder

Industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists specialize in workplace psychology and behavior. In other words, these specialists attempt to understand what motivates people in work settings, how to enhance productivity, and how to best manage stress in very stressful settings. They frequently consult employers during hiring phases and develop personality assessments.

There are many opportunities available to I-O psychologists in various industries. These professionals can specialize in various sub-fields, including human resources, human computer interaction, worker training, employee productivity, etc. Some I-O psychologists work at colleges and universities as researchers. I-O psychologists with years of experience often begin consulting firms.

Some universities offer industrial-organizational psychology undergraduate programs. Most graduates of I-O psychology bachelor's degree programs usually find human resources jobs, but other opportunities are available in this field. I-O psychologists with graduate degrees have more job opportunities to choose from and typically earn higher salaries.

For example, I-O psychologists with master's degrees often obtain employment with consulting firms, government agencies, fortune 500 companies, and colleges and universities. Since I-O psychologists are in high-demand nationwide, more universities are now offering graduate programs in this field.

Industrial-organizational psychology programs focus on the scientific study of individual and group behavior in institutional settings, applications to related problems of organization and industry, and that may prepare individuals to apply such principles in organizational and industrial settings. Programs typically include in depth instruction in group behavior theory, reward/punishment structures, organizational theory, human stress studies, motivation dynamics, human-machine and human-computer interactions, alienation and satisfaction, environmental and organizational influences on behavior, and job testing and assessment.
