School Overview
Indian River State College (abbreviated IRSC) is a public, four-year, state college located in Fort Pierce, Florida that offers a large selection of undergraduate degree programs. Most students at IRSC come from the surrounding counties of St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River, and Okeechobee. In addition to its main campus in Ft. Pierce, IRSC has campuses in St. Lucie West, Port St. Lucie, Okeechobee, Vero Beach, and Stuart.
IRSC offers several associate degree programs and nine bachelor's degrees in various fields of study including teacher education, exceptional student education, nursing, public safety administration, nursing, and healthcare management. Indian River College is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.
Established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College, the college moved to its current digs in 1963 after the city of Fort Pierce donated the site for that purpose. The name was changed in 1970 when the Board of Trustees decided that it should be more reflective of the college's service to the community; this was part of a greater national trend for public junior colleges to eschew the word “junior” for “community”. The name was changed to Indian River Community College and amended to Indian River State College in 2008 as part of a transition into a four-year institution.
The school’s mascot is the Pioneer. Its campus occupies an 87-acre site that was formerly the Fort Pierce landfill site.
Academics
IRSC offers both associate and bachelor's degrees, having recently added nine of the latter in the following fields:
- Middle and secondary school teacher education in math and science
- Exceptional student education
- Nursing
- Organizational management
- Public safety administration
- Healthcare management
Accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the school also offers educational programs, including applied technology diplomas, and technical certificates, in addition to an adult high school program.
IRSC’s dual enrollment program, in conjunction with the state, lets students take college classes at a discounted rate while attending a public high school. The school is the site of the Clark Advanced Learning Center, a technology-based high school that is a joint effort with the Martin County School District.
The American Association of Community Colleges and the Center for Digital Education tapped the Kight Center for Emerging Technologies as no. 1 in technology in the nation for mid-sized colleges.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
A wide range of financial aid options is offered to IRSC students. These include:
- Federal Pell Grants
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
- Florida Student Assistance Grants
- Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program
- Federal TEACH Grant
- Federal Work-Study Program
- Federal Direct Student Loans
All applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Federal aid recipients are subject to satisfactory academic progress guidelines and must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.
Athletics
Known as the Pioneers, IRSC college athletic teams are particularly known for their successful diving and swimming athletes. Indian River men’s swimming has won 39 straight National Junior College Athletic Asociation swimming championships and the women’s team has garnered 31 straight national championships.
Alumni now in the Major Leagues include Angel Pagan of the San Francisco Giants, John Venters of the Atlanta Braves, and Steve Pearce of the Houston Astros.
Library System
The Miley Library serves as IRSC’s main library. The Chastain Campus Morgade Library is a joint-use facility operated in cooperation with the Martin County Library System. The Dixon Hendry Library Collection houses a wide range of frequently used materials, while the Mueller Campus Brackett Library is a joint-use facility operated with the Indian River County Library System. Finally, the Pruitt Campus Library is a joint-use library operated with the St. Lucie County Library System.
Student Housing
There is no on-campus housing at IRSC. Students are responsible for arranging their own living quarters.
